What Are The Symptoms?

Knee pain usually starts with pain ascending and descending stairs

Limping or walking differently due to pain

Dull aching pain that can sometimes throb when resting

Sharp shooting pains radiating up the inner side of the thigh in more chronic cases

Mild swelling around the knee which may be associated with redness

Tight calf muscles that tighten very quickly after stretching

Causes/risk factors

  • Weight gain: our feet are designed to carry a ‘normal’ weight.
  • Pregnancy (in the last 10 weeks)
  • Age: as we get older ligaments become tighter & shorter and muscles become weaker; the ideal circumstances for foot problems!
  • Unsupportive footwear
  • Over-pronation: This is a condition whereby the feet roll over, the arches collapse and the foot flattens.

I thought podiatry was just the foot?

Podiatry is the study of the lower limb and associated structures, which very much includes the knee. As many of you may know, the body works like a scissor jack, when one joint is affected, the whole chain can be out of balance. Podiatrists are trained to look at the body as a whole, from the foot upwards, but also from the head down.
